Keynote, Conference and ‘After dinner’ Speaking

Are you organising a conference and searching for an experienced speaker to open or close your conference, or to engage your audience with an entertaining after dinner speech?

Dave will captivate your audience with his story telling, make the stories relevant to your conference and the only disappointment will be that the speech comes to an end!

You know that you don’t want to be ‘that’ conference organiser… trying to explain to your CEO why the opening speaker did not engage and excite the audience, or why the after-dinner speaker had the guests wriggling in their seats, hoping dessert would be served soon.

Let’s have a quick phone conversation.

Once I understand a bit about your audience, your organisation and your conference theme I’ll let you know if I think I am the right speaker for your conference. So, in just a few minutes, I can help you solve one of your major to-do’s, and get on with other important stuff.

In the last year, I have spoken to hundreds of people across New Zealand, Australia and the USA. If you book me, I will deliver what we agree.

I am so confident that you (and your audience) will be 100% satisfied that if you book me for your conference or event I absolutely guarantee it.

Recently I delivered an after-dinner speech to the annual dinner meeting of 82 CFO’s, accountants and their partners. I began my 45-minute talk describing why my favourite place in the world was hanging below a moving helicopter, and the people and things I needed to TRUST in order to do this. Although most of them were initially sceptical, I managed to convince them that the things I needed to trust in my rescue helicopter role were essentially the same as the things they needed to trust in the own business or team. I finished by ‘bringing them along for the ride’ as I told the story of one of my more memorable rescues, and by the end, some of them had tears in their eyes and many were literally moved to the edge of their seat.

No lives were saved (this time) but the dinner organiser was extremely pleased and I felt like I had completed another successful (speaking) mission!

Dave spoke at the Chartered Accountants ANZ Capital CFO Special Interest Group Annual Dinner that I organise each year, he was the after-dinner speaker. Dave was both engaging and entertaining relating his experience on the Westpac helicopter back to the workplaces and the boardroom. He had some amazing stories! He was so captivating that I forgot to take photos of him speaking for our records. I highly recommend him!

With nearly 4,000 rescue missions aboard the Westpac Rescue Helicopter here in New Zealand, hundreds of ambulance and fire calls back in the USA, and many weeks of working with elite rugby teams including the South African Springboks, the Argentinian Puma’s and numerous International Rugby Sevens teams, I have a huge selection of stories and lessons that can entertain, enlighten or inform your audience.

Some of the many stories I can draw on:

  • The incredible people and teams I worked with on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and how people from different organisations come together to complete live saving tasks

  • Finding the wreckage of the NZ Airforce Iroquois on Anzac Day 2010, and rescuing the sole survivor

  • The logistics, planning and training needed to perform a helicopter rescue hundred of kilometres from land

  • Responding to Christchurch within a couple of hours of the devastating earthquake on February 22, 2011

  • Crisis management and business continuity – how our management team handled the crash of our helicopter

  • Practical experience in working with the media and building a media strategy

  • How I helped avert a major problem by bringing part of a rugby team to a strip club
